What to Expect
The first visit will last between an hour and an hour and a half.
Please arrive a little early to fill out paperwork, or download the forms and complete them prior to arrival. Wear layers or loose fitting clothes so points can be accessed. Gym shorts and a tank top are perfect acupuncture attire. I will ask you to remove any watches or bracelets so I can feel the pulse on both your wrists.
We will discuss your current concerns and past medical history. I may ask you some really weird questions! I will probably also look at your tongue. No need to do anything out of the ordinary for this, as far as dental hygiene is concerned. Your tongue can provide a lot of answers regarding what’s going on with your body. As mentioned above, I will probably also feel your pulses. This isn’t necessarily just to count how many beats per minute, although speed of the pulse is evaluated. I’m feeling the “quality” of the pulse, which can also aid in providing an accurate diagnosis.
Then I’ll have you lay on the massage table, most likely fully clothed, either face-up, face-down, or side-lying, depending on your comfort level and which points I’m thinking for your treatment. I generally use between 12 and 20 needles per treatment. You might feel a pinch as the needle is inserted, and some points are more sensitive than others, but for the most part, you will generally not feel any pain. The needles are retained for about 25-30 minutes while I leave you alone to relax, meditate or zone out. After removing the needles, I may decide you would benefit from cupping, moxibustion, or gua-sha, other modalities that I offer. I’ll be sure to explain the procedure so you know what to expect.
After the treatment is over, most patients generally feel at peace, like they just left a spa. Common side effects are increased energy, enhanced mental clarity, better sleep, and improved mood. We will discuss a realistic treatment plan for your particular condition and schedule any follow-up appointments as necessary.
